Tips on Installing Wood Flooring
If you have never installed a hardwood floor, you may need some basic tips to help get you started. The most important thing that you can remember when installing hardwood floors is that measuring the space correctly is the key to a successful project. Once you have measured the space, then you can appropriately choose which size floor panels you are going to go with. Placing the boards correctly is key to your project. Always allow 15 to 20 percent extra when you buy your wood, for mistakes in cutting, and irregular boards.
When going with a sub-floor, always choose at least a 3/4 inch plywood, as this meets the minimum requirements.
Since nobody likes a squeaky floor, contractors should always check for a squeaky floor before they go back down with the floor installation. When you find the location of the squeak then you should reinforce the spot with a drywall screw. You should always start the first row with a long board, and when choosing this board always try to choose the board that is the straightest. When laying the boards, they should always be perpendicular to the floor joists. When you nail the first rows directly to the floor joists this makes for a well secured flooring.
Pay attention at all times to how the hardwood panels connect to each other as you are laying them out. If you don't then you could end up with a mess that you will have to take up again to get it right. When it comes to nailing, you nail every ten to twelve inches. When you nail these panels use a crowbar and a couple pieces of scrap wood to put pressure on the panels, and firmly anchor the pieces together as you are nailing them together. Before even attempting the project understand that you are going to have to fill up gaps in the flooring with a wood putty. Remember, when choosing the wood putty, that it matches the wood flooring that you are installing.
